Navigating the First Year: A Perspective from Monash Law School
Introduction:
Since 1964, Monash Law School hasn’t just been a place for students to progress their legal education, but a place that fosters inclusivity within a community that understands the importance of justice. In their first year, Monash Law students begin their journey with a strong focus on the foundations of law, while also having opportunities to engage in various activities and events. This article will explore the experience of Sofia Galletti, a first-year Monash Law student, shedding light on the diverse aspects of her introduction to law school.
Meet the Student:
Hey! My name is Sofia Galletti, and I am a first-year Monash Law student.
Last year, I graduated from Brentwood Secondary College in Glen Waverley, having “worked like a Trojan”, some may say, to surpass the very high ATAR threshold Monash Law begs of you. Although the Morrisby tests at school consistently indicated that I was well suited for a career in law, and my parents assured me that my talent for arguing would take me far, I can safely say that law has always been my own desired path. Upon receiving my letter of entry into my double degree of Law (Honours) and Global Studies (International Studies), I thought it was time to pull my socks up and get to business… Starts watching Suits (cough cough, Harvey Specter) … On a more serious note, whilst this law degree is not “what you see in the movies”, my expectations for my first year were largely met. If anything, Monash Law has exceeded my initial expectations!
Academic Experience:
Whilst many people reassured me that “nothing compares to year 12” or that “uni is a breeze”, this does not apply to a law degree… It comes as little surprise that even the first year of this degree has an intense workload. Rumours went around among first years claiming that “they give us more work at the start to give the weak a chance to drop out”, however, my third- or fourth-year friends would say otherwise. Nonetheless, the introductory units are quite kind to first years, retrospectively speaking. Foundations of Law (LAW1111) was instrumental in acquiring the fundamentals for studying law, such as the history of the Australian legal system, the basics of statutory interpretation, how to reference using AGLC4, etc. Criminal law (LAW1114) doesn’t “hold your hand” as much, but it’s more interesting! This story repeats with Public Law and Statutory Interpretation (LAW1112) and Torts (LAW1113).
Social and Extracurricular Life:
The social aspect of Monash Law organised by the Monash Law Students Society (LSS) has been my biggest enjoyment of this degree thus far. Upon becoming an LSS member, I was left speechless at the number of activities and events organised for law students, particularly first years, with the Law Camp at the start of the year taking the cake for me. Having known no one before starting this degree, I hoped the First-Year Law Camp would help me connect with classmates. I couldn’t have been more mistaken. Instead, the camp helped me forge a close-knit group of friends who will get me through this degree! From the frequent bar nights to the legendary Law Ball at Crown, I’m incredibly grateful for the sense of community that Monash Law has created through these events. In terms of personal growth and career-oriented opportunities, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the LawCord team within the Monash Law Ambassador Program and networking with industry professionals through the various Meet with the Firm events, as well as the professional workshops and panels hosted at the Monash Law Chambers.
Regarding the study-life balance, I didn’t have much difficulty. This is not only because I am very organised and a naturally built home studier (unlimited time with my cat!!), but because I'm juggling semi-pro soccer training, part-time work, and a social life. For me at least, having a busy life outside of the degree is the secret to not burning out. Yes, it sounds contradictory, but by taking your mind off your studies with a range of other activities, you won’t feel like you’re being swallowed by a law degree, which believe me can happen.
Reflections on the Monash Law School Experience:
Overall, whilst it isn’t over yet, I will look back at my first year in Monash Law with fondness, because I have truly enjoyed 85% of my time in this degree (-15% for the weeks where I had five assignments due at the same time and thought my life would end).
I would say my notable successes were to have adapted well, made lifelong friends, involved myself in extra-curriculars, and achieved a comfortable WAM that I aim to maintain in the years to come.
